Status Updates are live and will hopefully see frequent use 😅
In my exploration of websites dedicated to IndieWeb principles I noticed many had short-style posts serving the same function Tweets. Since many of these webmasters are limiting their interactions on incumbent social media platforms these Tweet-like posts were not unexpected.
I decided to do the same. I have also been AWOL from Facebook, Twitter et al. but had to admit I missed making quick update for myself if for no one else. Sometimes it’s nice to shout into the void not because we want to be heard but because we want to shout.
Since I’m using WordPress I had a few way to implement this but ultimately decided on the easier solution of using a post category rather than creating a custom post type. I named the category “Status Update” as an homage to the oft-forgotten (and maybe soon defunct?) Post Formats. Finally I added some plugin code to remove the Status Updates from the main blog page opting instead to give them their own dedicated page. I may want to tweak the Status Updates page but it’s fine for now. (Edit 03 Mar 2025: I have since tweaked the Status Update page).
I’m using the WordPress Mobile App to make updates. It’s fine but there is a delay because the app has to try a few times to push the post to this blog. I’m not sure if the problem lies with the app, connectivity or how I’m hosting my blog but it works (clumsy that it is).
